BARBARA ‘BARB’ ANN SMOAK MARTIN

Barbara “Barb” Ann Smoak Martin peacefully passed away, at the age of 91, at 9:25 p.m. on June 14, 2022, after a day of visitation by her family members, caregivers, friends, and assisted living staff at her current residence in Slidell, Louisiana. She was a proud military wife, originally from Cordova, South Carolina, and the daughter of the late Hubert W. and Alma Viola Smoak.
Barb retired alongside her husband, the former U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Virgil Martin Jr., in 1992 to watch sunsets and enjoy the company of their friends and family at their dream home in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The couple of 57 years were members of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. She had been an administrator at Tidewater Community College in Chesapeake, Virginia, and was a graduate of Winthrop College, for which she played basketball. She had many achievements in her professional career, but her most cherished accomplishments revolved around her family and their successes. She had many fun-filled memories of holidays spent with loved ones and festively carrying on annual traditions.
She was the beloved mother of three sons: Barry Virgil Martin of Connelly Springs, N.C.; Dale Robin Martin of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico; and Brandt Allen Martin of Slidell, LA and and mother-in-law of Beth Ann Buffington Martin of Slidell, LA. Additionally, Barb was the treasured “Memaw” to four grandchildren and their spouses: Kristan Nicole Martin and Kevin Nardone of San Antonio, TX; Dylan Hunter Martin of Flagler Beach, FL; Natalie Kate Martin and Jeffrey Ian Simms of New Orleans, LA; and Noah Christopher Martin of Delray Beach, FL. She also leaves behind many other relatives and close friends in the South whom she loved deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Virgil “Virg” Martin Jr., who originally was from Orangeburg, S.C.
Barb will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but she is at peace with Virg. She immensely enjoyed her grandchildren, family members, and friends, taking great pleasure in introducing them to one another while socializing with everyone. The avid reader also was an awesome cook who was passionate about food, as well as style, and would often share recipes and compliment others on their cooking and fashion sense. Recently, she had become a fan of the L.S.U. Tigers and the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, referring to Louisiana as “home.” Her closest friends included: her caregivers and friends whom she met during her 15-month stay in Slidell, her Bay Drive neighbors, members of an Outer Banks lunch group, and former co-workers. She will be remembered as an easy-going, charming Southern lady and especially for her kind and uplifting words to all who helped her live and sustain a joyous, active life to the very end.
Celebration of Life ceremony arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced later by Audubon Funeral Home. The family sincerely thanks the numerous doctors, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, other medical personnel, assisted living facility staff, friends, and relatives for all the love, support, and care they have given during her retirement and throughout her blessed life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society in memory of Virgil Martin Jr. or to charities of choice in memory of Barbara Martin. Condolences and tributes can be posted at www.AudubonFuneralHome.com
