67 festive and fun things to do at the Jersey Shore this weekend (Dec. 1-4)

During a typical year, many people look forward to the holiday season — and now that we are back to a bit more “normality” since the COVID-19 pandemic, many holiday events are back into full swing (or just about).

The Jersey Shore might not be on your list as a top destination during the winter holidays, but many towns dotting the coastline have some special events worth checking out, despite the cold.

Here are some of the events — holiday-related or just something fun — happening the weekend of Dec. 1 to Dec. 4 and beyond along the Jersey Shore.

Asbury Park prepares for the holiday season

Asbury Park

Firemen’s Park Tree Lighting — Friday, Dec. 2, 5:30 p.m., at Main Street and Sunset Avenue, Asbury Park. This tree lighting ceremony includes a visit from Santa, festive music, holiday treats and hot chocolate!

The Asbury Park Santa Run — Saturday, Dec. 3, 10 a.m. at The Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Ave North, Asbury Park. If running (or walking) for charity is your thing, register for the Asbury Park Santa Run. Now in its seventh year, the event raises money for local non-profit Lunch Break, which provides food, clothing, life skills and fellowship to those in need in Monmouth County and beyond. Runners are dressed up in Santa suits as they run the course (spectators welcomed!) and enjoy after parties at the Stone Pony, Wonder Bar and St. Laurent. Run registration with fee required. After parties are ages 21+ and free for runners with wristband, varying fees for non-runners.

Asbury Park Kwanzaa Celebration — Saturday, Dec. 10, 2 p.m., at the Asbury Park Senior Center, 1201 Springwood Ave., 2nd Floor, Asbury Park. This celebration of culture and community will feature cultural music, performances by local artists, refreshments, giveaways and more.

Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar 2022 at The Asbury Hotel — Sundays through Dec. 18, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Asbury Hotel, 210 5th Ave., Asbury Park. The Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar, hosted by Asbury Park Bazaar and The Asbury Hotel, features local and regional artists, vendors and shops selling their goods inside The Asbury’s indoor lounge and hall, and outside in heated tents on the terrace. Also onsite are food, drinks, entertainment and craft workshops. Entertainment and vendors vary each Sunday. Free to attend, service animals only.

Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar 2022 at the Grand Arcade of Convention Hall — Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 18, noon to 5 p.m. at Grand Arcade of Convention Hall, 1300 Ocean Ave N, Asbury Park. Enjoy shopping from 16 local designers and makers (which vary each day), along with retail tenants Betty’s Icebox, Wanderlust, Carla Gizzi, Funhouse, Drift, Sanctum Handmade and Asbury Park Roastery, in historic Convention Hall. Also onsite are food, drinks, entertainment, a toy drive, photos with Santa and more. Free to attend, pet friendly.

“Local * ish,” a group art exhibition — Exhibit on view through Dec. 23. Gallery open Mondays noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday by appointment, Fridays noon to 8 p.m., Saturdays noon to 9 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.; Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park. Atlantic City

Tree lighting ceremony and multicultural community holiday festival — Thursday, Dec. 1, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., O’Donnell Memorial Park, Atlantic City. Atlantic City residents and visitors are invited to the park for a tree lighting ceremony and multicultural community holiday festival with holiday singing and a dance performance by Dynasty Alliance, hot chocolate and apple cider, live DJ, pictures with Santa, and more. Free.

Atlantic City Holiday Bazaar 2022 — Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4, noon to 5 p.m. at Noyes Arts Garage at Stockton University in Atlantic City. Now in its second year, the Atlantic City Holiday Bazaar features shopping, local and regional vendors, music, food and drinks. The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University is a big part of the Arts District in Atlantic City and looks to promote education, provide resources for emerging artists, and enrich the community. This all-ages event is free.

Winter Wonderland Parade — Saturday, Dec. 3, noon to 4 p.m. (rain date Sunday, Dec. 11), Atlantic Avenue from to Center City Park, Atlantic City. The Winter Wonderland Parade is returning to Atlantic City. Parade route along Atlantic Avenue and ends at Center City Park. Following the parade, a drill team performance battle and meet and greet with Santa Claus is sure to entertain. Free event. For more information, visit acnj.gov.

Showboat Atlantic City sets up a 50 foot tall Christmas tree on the Boardwalk

Winter Wonderland at the Yard — Various events in December, The Yard at Bally’s Atlantic City. Visit the Yard at Bally’s Atlantic City for its first-ever indoor/outdoor Winter Wonderland, featuring holiday decor and cocktails, special food menus with beer pairings, fire pits to keep warm with friends and family, cornhole and more. Live entertainment every weekend with beer specials starting at $5.

Thursday, Dec. 1, 4:30 p.m. - Holiday tree lighting at the Yard, with complimentary hot chocolate, holiday treats and a toy collection for Toys for Kids.

The Atlantic City Ballet presents The Nutcracker — Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., at Stockton Performing Arts Center, Galloway, and Saturday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m., at Caesars Atlantic City. Watch this holiday classic performed by Atlantic City Ballet since 1982. Choreographed by Phyllis Papa, the production has become a holiday tradition for many families. Stockton PAC tickets range from $10 to $35, Caesars tickets from $23.

Candy Cane Lounge Pop Up at Resorts Casino Hotel — Daily through Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City. Bar One at Resorts is transformed into the Candy Cane Lounge Pop Up with candy cane-inspired drinks like the Candy Cane Kringle and Mistletoe Martini, live music and more. There is also an Ugly Sweater Party at Bar One on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m., with prizes.

Swing Into Christmas musical comedy show — Friday, Dec. 9, 8 p.m., at Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City. This annual performance starring Jim “The Singing Lifeguard” Craine, the Atlantic City Allstar Band, Atlantic City’s songstress Suzie Neustadter, tv host and singer Michele Dawn Mooney, and more benefits U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots campaign. Cash Bar from 7 to 9 p.m., show begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free for everyone bringing a new, unwrapped toy.

Deck the Hall - Festival of Trees — Thursday, Dec. 1, through Saturday, Dec. 31, Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall lobby, Atlantic City. View the decorated trees on display in the lobby of Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for free during the hours the lobby is open. In conjunction with the CRDA and Lite 96.9 WFPG, local businesses, organizations, arena partners sponsor the holiday trees to help raise funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children of Atlantic, Cape May, and Camden counties.

Historic pipe organ recitals — Weekdays from Monday, Dec. 5 through Friday, Dec. 23, at noon, Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. The historic pipe organ will be doing free daily recitals (donations accepted), with 2-hour walking Curator’s tours on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. for $10.

Santa and Story Time — Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 3 to Dec. 24, noon to 5 p.m., and weekdays on Dec. 14, 16, 19, 20, and 21, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Showboat, Atlantic City. Kids and families can enjoy a story time with Santa as part of Showboat’s Holiday Extravaganza.

Jingle Bell Bar: A Holiday Pop-up Experience — Thursdays through Sundays until Jan. 1, 2023, 5 p.m. to midnight, at 1927 Lounge at Ocean Casino Resort, Atlantic City. Ocean Casino Resort brings in the holiday spirit by transforming 1927 Lounge into Jingle Bell Bar: A Holiday Pop-up Experience, featuring festive cocktails, nostalgic decor, and themed entertainment. Ocean will make a monetary donation to Atlantic County Toys for Kids.

Chanukah On Ice — Saturday, Dec. 24, 6:30 p.m., Flyers Skate Zone in Atlantic City. Skate to the sounds of lively Chanukah music, with a special appearance by the Macabees, and take part in exciting skating games. Bayshore Holiday Bazaar 2022 — Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11, noon to 5 p.m. at Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. The Bayshore Holiday Bazaar, in its second year, features local and regional artists, vendors, and shops selling vintage and handmade art, jewelry, home goods, and more. This holiday market is inspired by the traditional “Weihnachtsmarkts” held in Germany and the venue offers water views with ample, free parking. The event is free, all ages, rain or shine and pet-friendly.

Surflight Theatre, Beach Haven

Beach Haven

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, the Musical — 2 p.m. performances on Dec. 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17 and 18; 7:30 p.m. performances on Dec. 3, 9, 10, 16, and 17 at Surflight Theatre, 201 Engleside Ave., Beach Haven. Four singers join forces to help a World War II veteran bring his small country inn back to prosperity in this fun-filled holiday musical. Tickets $31 for children 12 and under, $41 for adults.

Belmar

Christmas Light Show — Saturday, Dec. 10, 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Connelly-Campion-Wright Building at 704 Belmar Plaza, Belmar. The Christmas Light Show returns this year in a new location at Belmar Plaza. The shows, which run approximately 20 minutes, are free, but donations are welcomed to help raise money for RallyCap Sports, a nonprofit 501-c-3 charity which sponsors sports programs and builds facilities for children with disabilities.

2022 Menorah Lighting — Saturday, Dec. 19, 5:30 p.m., Pyanoe Plaza, 9th and Main Street, Belmar. Belmar’s 2022 menorah lighting will take place in Pyanoe Plaza at dusk.

Cape May

Congress Hall tree lighting ceremony — Friday, Dec. 2, 6 p.m., Grand Lawn at Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place, Cape May. The night begins at 6 p.m. with live music by the Don Evans Trio, the HoneyHawks and the Cape May All-Star Jazz Quintet. At 7:30 p.m., the Congress Hall Festival Choir leads the crowd in a holiday sing-along. The tree lighting ceremony takes place at 8 p.m. with a 30-foot Tannenbaum is illuminated. Strollers are not permitted on the lawn area directly in front of the tree lighting stage for safety purposes.

Cape May transforms into a Christmas Village during the holidays

The Congress Hall Express and Carousel — Train rides Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 31, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and carousel rides Thursdays and Fridays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 7 p.m., until Dec. 31, Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place, Cape May. The carousel returns for Winter Wonderland, and Congress Hall Express offers train rides around the grand hotel’s lawn and veranda. $5 per ride. Cape Resorts Hotel guests receive one Train & Carousel Ticket at check-in per child under 12 years of age.

West Cape May Christmas Parade — Saturday, Dec. 3, 5 p.m. The parade begins at the West Cape May Volunteer Firehouse and marches South on Broadway, winds East on Perry, and onto Carpenter Lane in the City of Cape May. Rain date is Sunday, Dec. 4.

Holiday Artist Marketplace Pop-up Sale — Saturday, Dec. 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave., Cape May. An outdoor pop-up tent sale featuring the original, hand-crafted works from local Cape May artists. Warm up by the fire pit with a drink from the hot chocolate station. Free admission and parking.

Cape May City Crafts at Christmas — Saturday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Avenue, Cape May. Unique holiday crafts, handmade by each vendor, are on sale. No mass-produced items accepted. For more information, call 609-884-9565.

Holiday Farm dinners at Beach Plum Farm — Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 24, 5:30 p.m, Beach Plum Farm, 140 Stevens St., West Cape May. Holiday farm-to-table dinners at Beach Plum Farm begin with a hayride tour of the farm fields, followed by a candlelit stroll through the Woodland Trail for fellowship and cocktail hour. The multi-course family-style meal highlights the pasture-raised turkeys, heritage pork, winter vegetables and fresh herbs. Christmas Candlelight House Tours — Saturdays through Dec. 18, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at various properties in Cape May. Cape May’s Christmas Candlelight House Tours, presented by Cape May MAC, have been an annual tradition for nearly 50 years. The self-guided tour allows you to step inside decorated historic homes, inns, bed and breakfasts, churches and hotels. Each Saturday features different properties and advance purchase is recommended. Tickets $30-45.

Tis the Season: The Forgotten Caroler — Dec. 1, 8, 9, 15, 22, and 23, 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Physick House Museum, Cape May. An unexpected winter storm disrupts the Bennett family’s holiday plans — will they find a way to regain their holiday spirit? An original play, written by Jennifer Hickok, brings the audience along the drama of a Victorian Christmas gone wrong as the drama moves from room to room on the first floor of the 1879 Physick House Museum. Tickets $20-25, reservations recommended.

Lamplighter Christmas Tour — Fridays, Dec. 2, 9, and 16, Tuesday, Dec. 27, and Thursday, Dec. 29, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Cape May. This self-guided evening tour includes a selection of Cape May’s finest B&B inns and private homes, decorated for the holidays, and includes “An Old-fashioned Christmas” exhibit at the Physick Estate’s Carroll Gallery. Tickets $25-35, advance purchase is recommended.

Santa’s Trolley Rides — 30-minute daytime tours on Dec. 3, 11, 17 and 18, various times, Physick Estate, Cape May. Mrs. Claus tells stories and sings holiday songs on this trolley ride through town, and Santa himself makes an appearance at the gazebo on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. Tour begins and ends at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., with free parking available. Tickets $15-20, reservations highly recommended.

Ghosts of Christmas Past Trolley Tours — 30-minute evening tours on Dec. 2, 4, 11, 16, 18, and 23, various times, Washington Street Mall Information Booth, Cape May. Listen to Christmas stories featuring Victorian ghosts, as told by a member of the East Lynne Theater Company, on this ride along the historic streets of Cape May. Begins and ends at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Tickets $15-25, reservations highly recommended.

Emlen Physick Estate house tours — Various tours and dates throughout December, Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. Choose from the Physick Family Christmas House Tour or the Evening Yuletide House Tour. Tickets $15-20.

Trolley tour: All That Glitters! Victorians ring in a new century! — Daytime tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Dec. 23, Washington Street Mall Information Booth, Cape May. Travel back to 1899 as preparations for a very important New Year’s Day celebration are made. Tours depart from the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Tickets $15-20.

Holiday Lights Trolley Rides — 30-minute evening tours until Dec. 31, except Dec. 24 and 25, Ocean Street trolley stop, Cape May. Listen to Christmas music as you take a tour through the historic streets of Cape May and take in the lights of the Victorian homes, inns, and bed and breakfasts decorated for the holidays. Trolley tours are open-air and blankets are recommended. Tour begins and ends at the trolley stop on Ocean Street. Tickets $15-20.

Holiday Inns Tour — Dec. 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., various locations, Cape May. This self-guided daytime tour features several of Cape May’s bed & breakfast inns decorated for the holidays. Trolley shuttle service available during the tour. Tickets $15-25.

“An Old-fashioned Christmas” Exhibit — Now through Jan. 1, 2023, beginning at 10 a.m. (closed Christmas Day), Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. The Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House of the Emlen Physick Estate is transformed into a holiday wonderland with an extensive Dept. 56 Dickens Village collection, as well as old family photos, trains and more on display. Free admission.

Winter Wonderwalk — Now through Jan. 1, 2023 at Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. Take a free walk around the decorated grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum.

Highlands

Holiday Drag Show - 2022 SLAY Ride! — Wednesday, Dec. 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Proving Ground Waterfront Dining, 56 Shrewsbury Ave., Highlands. This holiday-themed Drag Show will sleigh you! With tributes ranging from Rudolph to the Virgin Mary to a live Christmas tree, and new games, give-aways and more, you’re in for a night of fantastic entertainment. Seating begins at 6 p.m., show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35, which includes show admission, a complimentary welcome cocktail and meet and greet with the cast. This is a 21+ event.

Keyport

Winter Pop Up Market — Saturday, Dec. 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., various locations including Town & Country Inn, 3BR Distillery, Fat Kat Tattoo, and Keyport Funhouse, Keyport. Shop unique handmade items — such as organic skincare products, wreaths, jewelry, soy candles, home decor and more — from more than 75 vendors in several locations throughout Keyport.

Lavallette

2022 UGLY Christmas Sweater Cabaret — Saturdays, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, with seatings at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 4, with seatings at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. at The Music Man Singing Ice Cream Shoppe, 2305 Grand Central Ave., Lavallette. This all-ages appropriate show — at old-fashioned ice cream shoppe — is designed to entertain the entire family. And when you order an ice cream sundae, the show is free! After orders are taken, the wait staff invites members of the audience to participate in fun spoofs. Once the sundaes are delivered, the short 15- to 20-minute cabaret show begins. Long Branch

Long Branch Holiday Bazaar 2022 — Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 11, noon to 5 p.m. at The Whitechapel Projects, 2nd Avenue, Long Branch. This holiday market is inspired by the traditional “Weihnachtsmarkts” held in Germany, and will feature goods from local and regional artists, vendors, as well as music, holiday photo stations, kids craft workshops and holiday decor. Vendors vary each day, so there’s always something new to see during the duration of the event. Whitechapel Projects (WCP) is an arts, food and cultural venue featuring a sustainable restaurant and bar and craft nano-brewery. The event is free, for all ages, rain or shine, and pet-friendly.

Pier Village Menorah Lighting — Monday, Dec. 19, 6 p.m., Pier Village, Long Branch. This annual menorah lighting ceremony to celebrate Hanukah features a lighting of the giant menorah, ice skating, festive music and traditional donuts, and more. Rabbi Laibel Schapiro, Rabbi Yaakov Greenberg from the Chabad of the Shore and Mayor John Pallone of the City of Long Branch will officiate the lighting. The menorah lighting will take place rain or shine.

Drinks and Dreidels Chanukah Comedy Night — Saturday, Dec. 24, 7:30 p.m., at Chabad of the Shore, 620 Ocean Ave, Long Branch. Enjoy sushi, drinks and a latke bar at Drinks and Dreidels. Adults only. Tickets $65. Call 732-229-2424 for more information.

Manasquan

Christmas parade — Friday, Dec. 2, 6 p.m., Asbury Avenue, Ocean City. Ocean City’s Christmas parade begins at 6 p.m. at 6th Street and travels along Asbury Avenue to 12th Street.

Ocean Grove

Ocean Grove Holiday Festival and Christmas in Ocean Grove — Saturday, Dec. 3, 10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Main Avenue, Bishop Janes Tabernacle, and Auditorium Square Park, Ocean Grove. Crafters, artisans and live music come together for Ocean Grove’s Holiday Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Terry and the Hats, a barbershop quartet, at scheduled to perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Band of Strays will perform from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Boutique is held at the Youth Temple. Justin Gonzales performs holiday favorites at 3 p.m. at Bishop Janes Tabernacle, and a Live Nativity can be viewed at 5 p.m. in the Great Auditorium. At 6 p.m. at Auditorium Square Park, the Christmas tree lighting takes place and carols are sung, with Santa arriving at 6:15 p.m. Free admission.

Point Pleasant Beach

Sea of Lights — Fridays and Saturdays from Dec. 9 to 17, plus Dec. 27 and 28, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, Point Pleasant Beach. This winter wonderland features treats, crafts, games and holiday entertainment. Take free photos with Santa on Dec. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Between Dec. 26 and 28, check out the Diving Santa show (requires admission fee into the aquarium). The Aquarium, Sweet Shop, Aquarium Gift Shop, Pavilion & Pavilion Arcade will be open for the holiday event.

There is also a Holly Jolly Package from Dec. 1 to 31, which includes aquarium admission, a $10 Pavilion Arcade Play Card, light-up necklace, hot chocolate (redeemed at Pavilion during Sea of Lights or at the Sweet Shop during regular business hours), and chocolate lollipop and candy cane (redeemed at the Sweet Shop), for $29 per person.

Point Pleasant Borough

Christmas Tree Lighting and Market in the Park — Saturday, Dec. 3, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Community Park, Point Pleasant Borough. This annual event includes the lighting of the Christmas tree, local performances, horse and carriage rides, vendors, food and entertainment, and of course — a visit with Santa!

Magic Talking Christmas Tree — Saturdays through Dec. 17, noon to 7 p.m., and Sundays through Dec. 18, noon to 6 p.m., next to the Smithville Train Station, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. The Magic Talking Christmas Tree is an oversized Christmas tree brought in from Santa’s forest which awakens to talk with visitors about holiday wishes. Free.

S’mores on the Greene — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. For a small fee, purchase a s’mores packet and make some gooey treats around the fire pits on the Greene, or just gather to get warm and watch the fun.

The Sculptures of Seward Johnson — Through Jan. 31, 2023, downtown Spring Lake. The life-like sculptures of Seward Johnson are on display in downtown Spring Lake. Johnson, who was born in New Brunswick on April 16, 1930, and died on March 10, 2020, created memorable statues depicting simple, everyday activities, 16 of which are on display. Surf City

Surf City Volunteer Fire Company and EMS Christmas Market and Tree Lighting — Friday, Dec. 2, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Surf City Volunteer Fire Company, 713 North Long Beach Blvd., Surf City. The indoor/outdoor event will feature goods from local farms, food vendors and crafters. Friday, Santa arrive on the fire truck to light the Christmas tree in front of the firehouse at 6 p.m.

Tuckerton area

Holiday boat tours along Tuckerton Creek — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 11, plus Dec. 12 to 14, tours begin hourly from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuckerton Seaport, 120 West Main St., Tuckerton. Enjoy a narrated open-air tour along Tuckerton Creek as guides talk about holiday traditions and possibly see houses and buildings lit up in holiday lights along the bay.
