James Carville Insists Trump Is ‘Most Serious Crisis That This Country Has Ever Faced’: ‘Entire Idea of the United States Is In Jeopardy’

Democratic strategist James Carville believes President Donald Trump is the “most serious crisis” the United States has faced in its entire history.

Carville joined Chris Cuomo on The Chris Cuomo Project this week and argued Trump’s global posturing is putting both the U.S. and entire world order at risk.

“I think right now, and I’m going be very serious — I’m 80 years old — I think this is the most serious crisis that this country has ever faced. I think the entire idea of the United States is in jeopardy. I really do. I think it’s fundamentally that profound a problem,” Carville told Cuomo.

When Cuomo asked for specifics on what is causing such “concern” for Carville, the once-advisor to former President Bill Clinton accused Trump of siding with Russia against Ukraine and getting the United States into a dangerous trade war with his global tariffs.

“We have a president who is siding with Belarus and North Korea and Russia. I’m sorry, that’s a crisis. We have a president that has appointed some of the most incompetent people you can imagine to the United States Congress,” he said. “We have a president who is starting a trade war with our three biggest trading partners and we’re watching the beginnings of which could be a financial meltdown that we can hardly imagine.”

Carville added he’s not “convinced” Trump loves the United States, calling his actions worse and more deliberate than past presidents’ “mistakes.”

JAMES CARVILLE: I think right now, and I’m going be very serious — I’m 80 years old — I think this is the most serious crisis that this country has ever faced. I think the entire idea of the United States is in jeopardy. I really do. I think it’s fundamentally that profound a problem. And I think if the Democrats act clever and determined, understand where they stand at this moment in history, I think that it would be very successful.

CHRIS CUOMO: You referenced Prime Minister [Harold] Macmillan — events, events are what tell the story — what are the events you’re pointing to, James, that give you this concern of where we are.

CARVILLE: The debt ceiling. They’re not going to get the votes, and they have to go to Hakeem [Jeffries], alright? We just need to be quiet. They’re going to have to stack arms because they’re not going to have the votes to have four and a half trillion dollars in tax cuts and do all the things they want.

CUOMO: But how does that make it a bad situation?

CARVILLE: I don’t know that it’s a bad situation.

CUOMO: You said it’s never been in crisis like this. What’s the crisis?

CARVILLE: We have a president who is siding with Belarus and North Korea and Russia. I’m sorry, that’s a crisis. We have a president that has appointed some of the most incompetent people you can imagine to the United States Congress. We have a president who is starting a trade war with our three biggest trading partners and we’re watching the beginnings of which could be a financial meltdown that we can hardly imagine. We have a president who does not respect our institutions, does not respect the limits to powers, the separation of powers that we have in our Constitution. I can think of no bigger crisis that this country has been in in my lifetime. Ever. I think we’ve had presidents who have made mistakes. The Iraq War being one — I thought they did it because they thought it would work, they didn’t do it because they thought it would hurt the United States. I think they were wrong. I am not convinced at all that Donald Trump loves the United States.
