Patriot’s Day, Monday, September 11

Former Governor Pat Quinn will commemorate Patriot Day – and the 16th anniversary of 9/11 – by opening the “Portrait of a Soldier” exhibit at the Columbia College Chicago Library Reading Room 301 at 12:30 p.m. The Library is located at 624 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago. The event is free and open to the public. The display features hand-drawn portraits of 291 Illinois men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since September 11, 2001. The unique exhibit – which seeks to put faces to the names of the fallen – is comprised of portraits created by artist Cameron Schilling of Mattoon, Illinois. The project began when Schilling drew a portrait of fellow Mattoon resident U.S. Army Spc. Charles Neeley after Neeley lost his life in Iraq. Schilling – then a student at Eastern Illinois University – committed himself to drawing a portrait of every Illinois servicemember killed in the Global War on Terror. Each portrait is lovingly done in Schilling’s evocative style. His efforts caught the eye of then-Lieutenant Governor Quinn, who established the “Portrait of a Soldier” memorial exhibit in 2004, and began taking the display to venues across Illinois. “Portrait of a Soldier” will be on display in the Library the week of Monday, September 11. Vera Klement/Dan Ramirez: Body and Spirit – Through September 30

This is the goal of both Chicago artist iconsexploring the unknown. Vera Klement/Dan Ramirez: Body and Spirit showcases a selection of works by both artists whose contributions and reputations are firmly established in the history of art in Chicago. Their connection goes back to the 1970’s when Dan Ramirez studied under Vera Klement at the University of Chicago as an MFA student (1975-77), and he recognizes her as having had the biggest role in his career. Their paintings are visually disparate and seemingly unrelated, but when considered in dialog with each other, and when their sources of inspiration are considered, we see a stronger connection among them. The exhibit will run through Saturday, September 30 and is free and open to the public. For additional information, visit: http://www.govst.edu/gallery.

National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM), 4041 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago

‘Portraits and Memories: Legacies of Service’ – Through Saturday, October 28

The NVAM is proud to present its upcoming exhibition,’ Portraits and Memories: Legacies of Service’ by Chicago-area artist Jeanine Hill-Soldner. ‘Portraits and Memories: Legacies of Service’ will be on display through Saturday, October 28th, 2017 with an opening reception Friday, October 25th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit will showcase two series of oil paintings: ‘Portraits of American Veterans,’ and ‘Memories of an Era: Reflections of Our Time.’ ‘Portraits and Memories: Legacies of Service’ presents a unique perspective on an experience of military service that is often overlooked–that of the spouse, parent, sibling, or child of an active duty service member or veteran. The juxtaposition of veteran portraits with scenes of family life highlights an integral aspect of military culture that is rarely explored. Jeanine Hill-Soldner grew up in a military family. Her father, Sgt. Maj. Dan L. Hill, was a 30-year U.S. Marine Corps Veteran who served in WWII, Korea, and completed two tours in Vietnam. After he passed away, the artist felt compelled to create work that honored his service and experiences along with those of other military veterans and members of their communities. Personal stories and memory are integral to her work as Hill-Soldner links the experiences of veterans and those of their loved ones through a poignant visual program. For more information about the National Veterans Art Museum, visit www.nvam.org, or call 312-326-0270.

Roosevelt University’s Gage Gallery, 18 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago

Photo Exhibit on Plight of World’s Stateless Children — Opens Thursday, September 14

Few can imagine what it is like to be stateless. Now a new photo exhibit “Nowhere People,” opening Thursday, September 14 at Roosevelt University’s Gage Gallery Chicago, tells the story. With its first showing ever in Chicago, “Nowhere People” by photographer Greg Constantine features 39 black-and-white photographs of children who have no citizenship, and therefore, no place to call their true home. A native of Carmel, Ind., Constantine spent 10 years photographing thousands of stateless people in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic, Ukraine, Serbia, Italy, the Netherlands, Iraq Kuwait and Lebanon. He will speak about his experiences and the importance of the exhibit at an opening reception that begins at 5 p.m. September 14 at Gage. While the United Nations has estimated 10 million people around the world today are stateless, Constantine believes that number is much higher. In addition, he believes that children of those without citizenship are impacted the most, which makes the Roosevelt exhibit not only unique, but also extremely powerful. The exhibit runs until December 2 and is free and open to the public. Gage Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information, visit www.roosevelt.edu/gagegallery or call 312-341-6458.

‘Silent Witnesses’ Art Exhibition – Through October 11

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled ‘Silent Witnesses’ by Carmen Chami. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery through October 11. On September 21, Ms. Chami will deliver an art historical lecture on traditional pictorial techniques popularized in the XVII century and their relationship to her artistic techniques at 12:15 p.m. in room 4340 with an artist reception to follow at 1 p.m. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Carmen Chami (Mexico City, 1974) graduated with a degree in Art Restoration. Her education specialized in the great Masters of the seventeenth century of New Spanish Baroque (Mexican Baroque) style and she was able to discover that it is a very particular way in which that they applied the color on the canvas with a precise order. The great masters she studied only used 8 pigments in most cases and the result was an art wonderfully rich in color and light. She translated all of this knowledge into her own pictorial language, with color being an invaluable resource and a powerful and dramatic expression. Chami’s paintings belong to important institutions such as the Mexican Presidency; Marines Secretary; National University of Mexico; Milenio Group and the National Death Museum. Chami is currently part of the National Creators System supported by the Mexican government, which obtained a grant for three years to develop the theme “Adlateres Migrantes” (Migrant Minions). Additional images and information are available at the artist’s website www.carmenchami.com. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The eclectic nature of the fair is quickly visible to visitors who will see ceramics, etchings, sculpture, photographs, paintings in many media, digital art works, jewelry featuring original elements, and hand-blown glass. A glass blower will demonstrate this ancient art. A new addition to the fair is the Kids’ Art Alley. It will offer a vast range of activities to delight the younger set, including the almost legendary Children’s Art Contest, self-portraits, castle building, crafts and more. Music plays an important role in the Park Forest Art Fair. For the fourth year in a row, the Village will host a music fest on Saturday, September 16 on the Village Green (see details below.) The acclaimed Tall Grass Arts Association Gallery, 367 Artists Walk in Downtown, will be open during the fair with a traditional summer exhibit of works by gallery artists. For information, call the Gallery at 708-748-3377.

Main Street Music Fest Returns — Saturday, September 16

The Village of Park Forest, in conjunction with the 62nd Annual Park Forest Art Fair, will host a “music fest” on Saturday, September 16 from 11 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. The lineup of bands performing includes an eclectic mix of renowned artists from Chicago and the Southland area. Come on out to downtown Park Forest for a day of rock, jazz, blues and more! Admission is free.

Rhythm System (11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.)

Teenage 3 piece Blues, RnB, and Neo-soul conglomerate that loves to bring the groove to their audience!

Kaben Kafö (Noon – 1 p.m.)

Kaben Kafö, created by Taylor, is a djembe ensemble comprised of some of Chicago’s most studied and gifted djembe/dunun professionals, getting together to breathe deeply with the intricacies, complexities and depth that is part of the deeper recesses of djembe music. Come experience a unique concert and bring your djembe drum with you for portions of the concert that will be interactive!

Michele Thomas and SoulMeme (1:20 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.)

SoulMeme is a contemporary jazz-, R&B-, and pop-influenced ensemble featuring the talents of singer/songwriter Michele Thomas, drummer Darren Scorza, guitarist Neal Alger, and bassist Clark Sommers. Working in the Chicago jazz scene from the late nineties, these longtime friends and collaborators have performed together on various projects including the most recent release from Michele Thomas called “Messenger”- a collection of Stevie Wonder songs treated with new and imaginative arrangements by Thomas, Scorza and Alger. SoulMeme stirs the jazz pot and continues the evolution of this most progressive of improvised idioms. Expect the kind unapologetic and joyous grooves inspired by artists like Jon Batiste & Stay Human, thinly veiled in the jazz-funk of Herbie Hancock and fortified with the soulful lyricism of Bill Withers.

Switchback (2:50 p.m. – 4 p.m.)

Switchback is the award-winning duo of Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack. Switchback draws on traditional Celtic music and original Americana songs that reflect their Irish heritage and Midwestern roots. Playing an exciting mix of mandolin, guitar, and bass, their harmonies have won them comparisons to famous duos, such as the Louvin Brothers, Everly Brothers, & Simon and Garfunkel. Music Connection Magazine said: “The words ‘American Roots & Celtic Soul’ only begin to describe this unusual act, whose vocal prowess is as pure as it is unique. There is no denying the stunning vocal blends that are achieved by this duo.”

The Big Boppers (4:20 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.)

The Big Boppers evolved out of the 1970’s local rock ‘n’ roll band, “Midnight Express.” John Falstrom (bass guitar), Frank Anastos (guitar/vocals), Phylis Renee Marconi (vocals/acoustic guitar), Gene Vinyard (sax/percussion) & Dennis Leahy (drums/cajons/percussion) will be playing rock ‘n’ roll from the 1950’s all the way to today’s top hits.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 708-747-0580.
