Earl Miller confirmed as US ambassador to Bangladesh

Earl Robert Miller has been confirmed by the US Senate as the next American ambassador to Bangladesh, the US Embassy in Dhaka said on its Facebook page.

The career member of the US Senior Foreign Service, Miller has been serving as the US ambassador to Botswana since 2014.

Miller must still be sworn in before he presents his credentials to Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid.

Prior to that, Miller was the consul general at the US consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa from 2011 to 2014.

He has also served at US embassies in El Salvador, Malaysia, India, Iraq and Indonesia.

According to a US State Department statement, Miller has a broad background in counterterrorism, economic development, and public health in addition to experience overseeing large-scale security programmes and developing US commercial opportunities.

Miller earned a BA at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1981 and graduated from the US Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Quantico, Virginia in 1994.

He has received a number of awards including the Department’s Award for Heroism and FBI’s Shield of Bravery and Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association’s Bravery Award. His military awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with “V” (Valour) Device, Navy Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.

Miller is poised to replace Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, who assumed her position in Bangladesh in January 2015.
